Guess who is coming to israel?

Remember where first you heard it .
Walking down Emek I bumped into D which I know from Redbridge, we had a litle chat and I offered her a lift to where she needed.
In the car She asked me what I miss about Redbridge, I told her - the Shabbat meals, the families, the walks in Epping forest.
I asked her what does she miss. Her answer blown me away.
She miss the most the Redbridge Israel Film Festival, that I started four years ago.

tears in my eyes.

The un edited and better version of my Dvar Torah for Limmud

As commentators show, the deed of the fathers is a sign for the sons (Ma`ase Avot Siman Le`Vanim), meaning the deeds of the forefathers is a sign or significant to the generations to come, it assumes some similarities and a long historical perspective. The sons of Jacob are rivals as their mothers were, and their Father Jacob and his twin brother Esau.
In Genesis 28 11-12 Jacob climbs a ladder up to the sky. Some commentators see not the ladder reaching the sky, but Yaakov himself seeing the angels ascending and descending on it.

And he lighted upon the place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took one of the stones of the place, and put it under his head, and lay down in that place to sleep.
And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top (Head in Hebrew) of it reached to heaven; and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.

If so, the image is quit clear: Jacob’s feet are on the ground, and his head in heavens, what a wonderful metaphor for a person who feels at home at both practical and spiritual worlds.
In which manner does Joseph bear a resemblance to his father?

Jaccob standing on earth in his head up in the sky with the angels is marking in his presence heaven and earth. That space becomes his territory. Joseph symbolise the transition from the lowest mark, to the highest, from a pit, from prison to the highest position in Egypt and to Mashiach Ben Yoseph. He also transform from the beautiful loved son, the desirable young man, to the foreign Hebrew man Pharon trust, to become the hated brother in his youth to the mean Egyptian who hides a goblet, mentally torturing his brothers and his own father, Jacob just to see Benjamin his brother. Jacob mourned the “death” of Joseph, and Joseph probably knew that. We can assume Joseph felt close to his father so why doesn’t he find a way to inform him he is alive?

In his commentary on the Torah, Nachmanides (Ramban) poses this question: Why didn't Joseph try to contact his father during all his time in Egypt? After all, the distance between the land of Israel and Egypt is only "six days" of travelling, according to Nachmanides' calculations. Why, when he became the head of Potiphar's household -- and could easily do such a thing -- didn't Joseph send a letter to his father, informing him that he was alive and well? Certainly, once he became viceroy, the second most powerful man in Egypt, he could have done anything he wanted. All those many years of Jacob languishing, mourning for his favorite son, could have been avoided. Didn't Joseph miss his father just as much? How could he be apart from him all those years?

There many answers to this question, I would argue Joseph wasn’t certain whether or not he want to belong to his family after his brothers sold him, Only after noticing how much his brother care about young Benjamin and his old father Jacob is till alive, allows him to cry few times and to realize he would like to join his family once again. The book of Genesis focuses on Individuals, families and communities, as it is reflected Joseph life story, from caring about his dreams, his family he shows responsibility towards his all nation.

On Chanukah we celebrate the festival of lights, of miracles, of the small and larger miracles and of transitions, few won many, a small amount of oil was enough for eight days. The main mitzvah of Chanukah is practiced not in synagogues, as in other holydays, but amongst families and friends. This Chanucka we pray individuals, families and communities with the families and friends of Gilad Shalit, Eldad Regev and Ehud Goldvesser, for their immediate and safe return.

Pain

Pain is a funny thing, in a painful way I guess.
Since the operation I cannot tolerate pain, and as I don't use pain killers it means I am in...pain.

On my few last hours in New York I managed to smash my fingers under the massive door of Tz`s flat. I couldn't feel anything just this wild scream in my head and the burning of the scar as if I am being cut once again.
On Friday I burnt my hand (for a good cause - the chicken was delicious), and again -I felt the scar burning. I am fully aware to the fact it does seem a bit Harry Potterish, thanks for pointing out.

As if the braintransmitters are reprogrammed, any pain they recognize is translated as life threatening danger, and the brain research for the last time life was on stake, and when it finds the op, June 18th - it all clicks, bingo. the scar burns.

My Greenberg Method instructor said I am learning to live with pain. I have to realize any animal that will go through that kind of procedure would die. The body is under trauma. I feel what she is saying. Any level of pain is exaggerated, I am becoming a grumpy young women. Complaining and being miserable and tired. it all equally extremely hurts for no real reason. The burn on my hand, PMS, A crashed finger, Waxing my eye brows.

I an trying to take it easy, I am repeatedly being reminded it takestime, a whole year. More then anything else to forgive my body. To be in peace with in myself. I have a lot to forgive, a lot to forget. But the body remembers. And it also has to forgive me and forget.

I wonder what it needs now: A diet to put it back into routine, or that will be interputered as athreat? Maybe something gentle comfort. Long walks, long baths and time to heal? But I want to start a diet. How can I convince my body to join me?

Deep breathing is the only answer, as I slowly learn.

The Teachers Strike

Orit Kamir writes about it from a gender perspective. Most of the teachers are women. I find it brave and clear.

More about it
Here and here .

I fully support their strike. I hoot when I see them demonstrating while I drive. that`s how we show we care.

The fact the Prime Minster is not getting involved worries me.
I think its part of his policy - he wants the fully-state-funded school system to collapse, he would love to see its privatesation, which is already slowly begins.
You know, after the educational of the army, the prisons maybe its his next victim?

Its saddens me. I see my teacher- friends in the UK, comfortable with their salary, they clearly dont feel the are on the bootom. my teacher friends here feel like פרייארים.

Reality or Fiction, What say you?

Wrong. Only two weeks ago on the airplane from New York to Cincinnati I was flicking through the Glamour Magazine someone left (thanks)on my seat. They had an article about the best Jeans to suit your figure - or something like that.

I heart rats

As someone who rarely goes to the cinema, I tend to grasp and live the film for a while. It happens to me quite often with fiction or poetry. When I read AB Yehushoua`s Mr. Molcho I started thinking like Mr. Molcho. Few poems by Shimon Adaf, Sivan Har Shefi, Leah Goldberg and Admiel Kosman have a similar effect of me. I memorize their lines and their own words come back to me in special moments.

I am serious now. A mouse passed in front of me. I am fond of pets, not rats. I would usually feel scared or disgussed. but watching Ratatouille made a difference in the way I view animals, or more precisely, rats. Seeing this rat running, pausing looking around, maybe even sniffing, made me realize the power of film as an art and as an educational tool.

And poetry even more.
I just want to clarify:
When I wrote about the need replace Ehud Olmert, I did not meant this in any way form or matter.

Specially not this month.

Wanna be a Jewish Educator?

Jewish Education is tough.
we are underpaid, our audience is shrinking daily, thanks to death and intermarriage and off course assimilation. We see our friends buying house while we pay rent, they get weekend in fancy hotel while we see a free lunch and learn we run as a free be.
Its a tough job.
In this visit to Houston (the best place on earth outside Israel), I discovered the glam side of it. The Limo, the nice hotel and the double-king size-8 pillows bed, convinced me I should stay in this profession.

Not to mention my favourite stuff, that makes me tick:
Jewish day schools, extra-curriculum Jewish Activities, the Feminisastion of Rabbinate, Collaborative fund raising, Cross denomination Jewish Education, Jewish Literacy and Nails.

Who is the responsible adult around?
Can some show some leadership?
Can someone please fire this guy?

Reflections: London and Burnham on Sea

Just walked in from a brilliant gig. Korin Elal and Eran Zur.

Eran Zur mentioned Uri Zvi Greenberg, and I thought to myself I should really post the paper I wrote about him.

Another insentive to learn Hebrew. So You could read his poetry I mean.

ולברוח לא אוכל;

I am very grateful

This post comes from my heart, or maybe more accurate, my uterus.
You might want stop reading here, It`s good place to stop. I invite you to keep reading, nothing too personal or too gross will be written, this is a safe place, right?

I noticed something is wrong around Shavuot last year, June 2006. My period was still steady but the bleeding was heavy. I was invited for Shavuot dinner to my friends A & S, at the middle of the main course I feel this wave, I feel wet as if.. As I excuse myself to the toilet I notice the chair I was sitting on has a stain, dark red stain, So did my white & brown pockdottes dress. I was soaked, near the chag table. Needless to say everyone saw it. Luckily they were all polite not to ever mention this.

It was a stressful time in life, realizing I am not staying in London, trying to stop loving someone, not knowing what the next step in life will be, not an easy time. I think many of us women are educated to believe that everything that has to do with our biology and psychology is due to gender, we are depressed because of hormones, we are PMS most of the time, right? So when my period was not steady I thought its because of the stress, saying goodbye. lack of closure.

It got worse and worse. I stained so many clothing items you will not believe. I bought special pads one would usually use after delivering a baby, I would replace it every couple of hours. I invested so much money. the sales of Always went up, share holders were extremely happy.

I got back to Israel, started university, and suddenly I notice my period comes every 20 days. I am very tired, I have grey circles under my eyes. I am very weak and depressed. It is all bleak. Every task seems impossible. I cannot handle reality. my friend told me I should go and see the gynecologist, I wonder whether I should go. So my period is not steady, it doesn't mean something is wrong, right? wrong.

I go to see him.He is not nice, or compassionate needless to see he doesn't seem to understand. He cannot check me, so he sends me to have a ultra sound check up.
And it`s there. 7cm on 7cm A tumour. Myoma. Benign probably, its too symmetric to be cancer. It very clear. Its pushing the uterus towards the pelvic bones. I do blood checks, I am anemic. the Iron is very low. no wonder. I need to eat meat. lucky lucky me.

I google Myoma. I read about hysterectomy. I cry at nights, I am numb during the day. I am terrified. In March I have to go to the hospital - I bleed very badly .It doesn't stop. I need this operation.

I seek for help, I find it. I start exercising. I start a process with a Greenberg Method instructor, I chose my own specialist gynecologist, with a spaceship style ultra sound machine. she is warm and reliable. In March i realize the tumour is growing and growing. I must have a surgery. they have to open the stomach. I start taking hormones. Its not easy. I am depressed. I start getting hot flash, its summer in Israel, and I cannot stop sweating. In the office the temperature is on 15 Celsius constantly. I cannot deal with it. My friends are great. Aliza goes with me every month to get the jab. Simone makes me tea and finds me an electric pillow to ease the pain. It hurts. I cry. I am tired. I lose some hair. I gain weight. I feel very unattractive. I cannot see babies. I hate them. each one of them. and their mothers too.

I write this:

My gynocologist which is frum explains to me that its quit common, especially among virgins at my age. Having sex involves a lot of blood movement to the uterus that prevents this kind of fibroid. Stuff your rabbi will never tell you.

I keep writing:

Suddenly I can think only about babies. my period stops. the surgery is nearer and nearer. I plan to recover in two weeks. to get back to work immediately. its all going to be fine. everything is under control.
I lose touch with people I cannot call them and say "hi, guess what I have in my stomach!" I am silent. I even hide it from my blog.

I slowly realize I will have a scar on my tummy. I am shocked how perfect my body was, and how come I never noticed it. a healthy body is a perfect body. Mine is not. I am bothered by the fact that plastic gloves will be inside my body, it gives my shivers. I am very worried. the evening before the operation I go to the beautician, I want to look great.

The operation is on June 18. the doctor that interviews me looks like Meredith Grey. She talks like her, only in Hebrew. where is Macdreamy? Nowhere.
I sign a lot of papers. she explains to me that one of the risks is that my uterus might be damaged, they might need to take it out if there is too much bleeding. Do I understand? I do. I ask her to write it down, that I allow them to leave part of the tumour inside if it will save my uterus. I want to be a mother.

My sister comes with me. I change my cloths to the ugly (yes, it is open) dressing gown. I cover my hair. They get me to the theatre. they start reading my medical history, I fall asleep. I wake up from the operation, completely drugged out. I keep repeating, asking my sister if they kept my uterus. they have. Have they? The tumour is 10cm on 10 cm. a grapefruit size, a melon. In three weeks time I will get the courge to call Pathology, its clear. not cancer. All Clear. I am clear.

I stay in Hospital for five days. I want to go back to my flat, not to my mother`s. I need my friends and my books near me. I stay at home for five weeks. I feel better and better. I feel a live. I am a live. I still don't get my period back. I keep dreaming I am pregnant. I cant be. In my dreams I am. I am worried. What kind of a women am I? no period. no husband. no babies. who will marry me?

I feel much lighter, my cheeks are pink again. I find myself laughing a lot. My hair looks good. I go to England. everyone tells me how great I look, I realize how ill I looked before, the grey circles, the dull hair, the heaviness.

The doctors tell me It should be back by now but its still normal. I want to be normal so I believe them.
Its my wish for the new year. and two days before Rosh Hashana It comes back. I am a normal women again. I am healthy. I am alive.

So here is my story.

What`s the message you ask?

Few things:
1. If you, your mother, sister, friend, wife, partner, sister in law or anyone else you care of, has problems with her period please encourage her gently to see the doctor. No need to wait, nothing gets solved as you wait. Feel free to forward this post, to cut and paste, coorect the grammer, whatever. Just make sure women are more aware about thier body.

2. There is no shame in having any gynocogical problems. its part of life. Its part of me. It doesn't define me.It is my (medical) history.

3. I want to thank my friends: Shlomit, Meirav, Merav, Michal, Aliza, Shosh, Basmat, Alexandra, Tehilah, Mini and Debs, Sagev, Simone,Sari, Sharon , Lior, David, Itzik, Sarit, Lisa, Tal, Rena, Harel, Joseph, Rivka, Tzipora, Sharon, Sharon, Noga, Emily, my family, and everyone else that prayed for my health. It meant a lot, the food you brought, the laundry, helping with the shopping, listening to my complaints endlessly, being there when I needed you. I am deeply moved.

I also want to thank David for triggering me to write about this.

Thank you for reading this post. It`s not your classic feel-good read, is it? Thank you.

Harav Yuval Cherlow was asked by an orthodox single women in her late 30`s was is the Helachic answer to her desire to become a mother, and whether or not she should have a child.
His answer surprised many, and showed me there are some rabbis who fully understand the complexity of being Modern Orthodox.

Can a single women get pregnant and bring up her child as part from the orthodox community?? the Letter she wrote the Harav Cherlow is very moving and sincere.

After his first responsa, came the second. The examples he brings from Rachel and Hannah, which I find relvant for the coming Prayers and Torah readings of Rosh Hashnah.

Its all in Hebrew.

The paradox of being me

The more I am concerned about my weight, the more I gain.

The more I am concerned about my finances, the more I lose.

If it only was the other way around:

I would be very rich,

completly thin and desired,

maybe even tall or

if I am really lucky,

blonde.

What am I?

Well this is my personality type. not sure about the colour scheme though.
That`s what it means:

Your imagination, self-assuredness, and knowledge of the world combine to make you a VISIONARY.

You have clear notions of how things could be, and the confidence to try to make them that way.

You enjoy having a routine, and prefer comfort and familiarity to risk and adventure.

Not needing others' approval to forge ahead, you are confident in your designs for the future.

Your imagination allows you to envision the world as a better place.

You're better at thinking of the big picture than you are with details, and you can see wonder in abstract things.

Style and appearances are important to you, and you have a good eye for beauty.

You are somewhat rigid in your beliefs, which comes from both confidence and an aversion to change.

You are good at creating works of art in forms with which you're familiar.

You're not afraid to let your emotions guide you, and you're generally considerate of others' feelings as well.

Generally, you believe that you control your life, and that external forces only play a limited role in determining what happens to you

Do you think its true about me?

On the way back from limmud fest we saw this:

Few photos from Limmudfest@peak district

Yesterday I was wondering Muswel Hill. I entered a health shop, as one does.
I notice a counter with Bach Remedies, which I generally approve of.
I look closer. It`s for Pets. Pets with emotional difficulties.

Is it Muswel Hill or me?

Was at J for Shabbat. Out of five of us. one is oil free, the other salt free, and the lovely third gluten free.
And guess what - the food was Delicious.
Do we really need so much oil and salt in our food?

Limmudfest

Well...I am in London. It good to be back.
Limmudfest was great. The music, the sessions, the scenery.
Best moments:
Jen Charlton singing Blue Raincoat.

D.J. Socalled wowing the audience with the most odd-unbelievable-I-think-I-like-it-but-why? music of the year. (check these are the good old days track)

Rabbi Joel Levy teaching. I felt Kdusha in the room. I am still thinking about it. Oppression and free choice. I will write about it more. TBC

Ghettoplotz with new tracks and visuals.

Koolooloosh- Great guys, Great music, Jerusalem Hip Hop. Very rough. sick. Love it

Darfur was one of the fuci. James Smith of Aegis trust and the Holocaust center in Nottingham is complete inspiration. I keep hearing what he said about our responsibility to help Darfur. you can learn more about it here.

Recommendations:

1. Salina on Emek Refaim offers the best stake in Jerusalem, ask for some spare garlic.
2. Arcafe offer a great brakefast of fresh fruit, Yougurt and museli. I have it without the Museli - fab.
3.Lolita by Nabakov. Its not for a proper frum girl I guess, but there is some thing compelling and repulsive at the same time.
4. I am in love. Deeply. His name is Geva Alon. Google him and find why. He might be the one.
5. Sleeping over checking emails. Always.
6. White wine is the new black. For me.
7. The new Crocks are great. I have a Marie Jane, in shocking pink. Loveit.
I am in London.
In the last few weeks I wasn`t calm at all, I could not stop thinking, I was obesseded with minor thoughts, not trying to solve poverty, or find the the soloution for the middel east conflict, just annoyinng thoughts.
They are gone now.
Its good to be back.

An important aricle from Haaretz, dealing with the Holocaust Claims in Israel.
I agree, No one should be left poor. Reaching an old age and being left alone poor and misreble is not a desirable situation. What is the Israli goverment doing to prevent it, from all the old people?
Not nuch I am afraid.

Nina Simone - Young Gifted And Black (Live)

Its one of my favourites. She would not let anyway to put a chip on her shoulder.
Look out for the drummer`s smile at the end.
I keep thinking, what on earth were the white policemen thinking to themselves.

For me its about freedom, taking pride, not willing to be seen as an unequal minority group.

Shabbat Shalom

I Saw them live on Sunday night as part of my Birthday celebrations. Back in the 1990`s they were a small band from a southern development town. Now they are massive in Israel. Back then this song meant the world to me. Now it makes me feel young.

The Orthodox Paradox, is a thought provoking article by Noah Feldman, published in the New York times and been talked in the circles of Jewish Education since.
read and judge.

A lot of the things he brings up resonated with me. Living my life the way I do doesnt really follow with what I was taught in School or at Bnei Akiva - the Modern Orthdox youth movement I grew up in. I am one of few who didnt get married yet, I lived abroad, I am observant and I see myself as orthodox, not sure if I am socially orthodox, but when it comes to practice that`s where I (most of the time) stand.
You see, Its hard for me to commit.

Blog Day 2007

After eleven days of tranquality I gave up to modern life and got myself a new mobile phone instead the one that was stolen at the wedding.
I plan to practice what I learned:

1. Mobile phones do have an OFF button.
2. People can wait.
3. An afternoon nap is a very good excuse for delaying return calls.
4. The world didn't stop. I am not that important.
5. Where is a will there is a way (to get in touch with me).

Enjoy.
I am now baby sitting a dog, a she dog. She is quite clever, and rather ugly. I think I like her. She is very loyal to her owner. She is waiting for him, her whole body directed towards the door, where she last saw him.
She was standing, crying for him.
Luckily I was able to gaurnity her he would come back for her.
She kept crying for more than an hour. then went and pieed on my carpet.
And I thought we could be girl friends.

9 Av

Its today. I`m not fasting following the doctor`s instructions. Its a new experience for me not to fast on this day I remember when we wee around the ages of nine or ten, we used to compete, who can fast the longest. I guess I lost this year.
Last night I was at the Merkaz Tarbut - the local Community Center. I was overwhelmed by the number of people that came along to read Eicha, Secular, Israelis, Non Israelis, Religious. people stam people and to sit together and reflect on what needs mending in our society in Israel. The words of Yochi Brandies, an Israeli author are still with me. Part of the reason for the destruction of the temple is the big cry the Israelites cried after the spies came back and spoke badly about the land of Israel, if we cried for no reason that night, said g-d, he will give us a good reason to cry now.

I reflect back: the disengagement, the war last year are good reasons to cry for me. the fact so many families that were evicted from thierhomes still don` have where to work, although the government promise them employment, the fact the prime minster didn`t resign after he war and the Winograd committee report, the fact Sderot is still bombed on daily basis, it is a reason for me to cry.

What I do learn from that is that sometimes we complain, talk badly, gossip, kvetch for no good reason. Its time to do, not to feel miserable.

I usually heavily disagree with Gidon Levy from Ha`aretz.
But today I agree with each word he wrote.
I think that my challenge as some one who works n the field of Jewish education is not to battle assimilation or inter-marriage, my challenge is to deal with ignorance.

Shabbat I was away with my family. I was too tires to enjoy.
Surprisingly or not, one of the sound tracks from Avenue Q stuck to me. I kept singing to my self It suck to be me.

1 reader from Finland
2 from Central America. only 1 from South America though.
2 From Singapore
3 From India.
1 from Moncton, Canada.
No one from Nebraska, which proves my point: there is no such place, its just an urban myth.

Loads from the UK - from Devon to Manchester. Anybody knows where on earth and England Wrexham is?

Its 17th Tamuz today, a day of fasting. A lot of terrible events happened on this day in Jewish History.
For me this year its a lot about marking a year to the war in Lebanon.

Bright Eyes

I like this song, from Bright Eyes.
click the title and get to hear and see thier clip. beautiful, simple and moving. me at least.

"First Day Of My Life"

This is the first day of my life
I swear I was born right in the doorway
I went out in the rain suddenly everything changed
They're spreading blankets on the beach

Yours is the first face that I saw
I think I was blind before I met you
Now I don’t know where I am
I don’t know where I’ve been
But I know where I want to go

And so I thought I’d let you know
That these things take forever
I especially am slow
But I realize that I need you
And I wondered if I could come home

Remember the time you drove all night
Just to meet me in the morning
And I thought it was strange you said everything changed
You felt as if you'd just woke up
And you said “this is the first day of my life
I’m glad I didn’t die before I met you
But now I don’t care I could go anywhere with you
And I’d probably be happy”

So if you want to be with me
With these things there’s no telling
We just have to wait and see
But I’d rather be working for a paycheck
Than waiting to win the lottery
Besides maybe this time is different
I mean I really think you like me

The Israeli blog sphere is all jazzed about the demonstration against the plea-bargain in the Katzav case.
I am disappointed, not by the legal system only, mostly by the fact that this demonstration was on Shabbat, not allowing me a an observant women to join in.
I want to be heard. I scream from the inside. Its a disgrace. He should not have a plea-bargain. A` should be included. And I want to say that. loud and clear. I want to join this battle, with other 20,000-30,000 like minded people, in Tel Aviv.
Oh, I can`t. I keep Shabbat.

Not proud to be Israeli today, quite ashamed of the accusations against Moshe Katzav, shocked about the deal he had with the General Attorney.
Unbelievable. Wait, it actually is.
So I am at home, recovering as they say.
Its nice to be at home. I realize it was wise to move to this flat, I like it a lot, it feels home. Last night had a long conversation realizing how many flats I made into a home in the past 4 years, four flats turned into a home.
I cannot concentrate for long, I can watch lazy films, do some reading, still not able to read anything clever or write,it will come back to me they say.
I discovered I made quite a lot of friends, and luckily, they know how to cool, thanks to them I have what to eat, shame I am not that hungry.
Friends are coming for London, they are all around. trying to meet up with them.
So you see, I am getting better. Soon my brain will function again, I might have something interesting to say.
Untill then: goodbye.

Back from hospital

1. How come nurses have their name tags on display, and Doctors don`t?
2. Why on earth was I receiving food for Geriatrics for 5 days? I was born in the 70`s, not the 30`s.
3. The younger the doctors are, the nicer and kinder you will find them. What`s the lesson? Does the more you get to know the human body the less you appreciate the human soul? or does the fat salary changes your psyche?
4. If the idea of you (or me in this case) staying in the hospital is for you (or me) to get more rest, why do the nurses wake you/me at 6:30 AM.
5. Pain and Brain do rhyme. And it does have implication on their semantics.
like: pain killers are brain killer. fact.

Handing in a big piece of work to day,its 12 poems I wrote.
I am giving a presntation today about an academic topic. Analazing a novel that was published in Hebrew in 1986, Grass Roots by Roth Almog, checking the Historiographics, analazing everything that happened that year. In the society and litrature.
As far as I am concered I was in 6th grade and I had a terrfic role in the school play, My grandfather died and bat mitzva was very small, besides that, It was a good year 1986, For me at least.
I decided not to take a private surgeon, I even didn`t check the cost. I guess its me rebelling against the power of money, an illness Israel is covered by. If you have money you can by a prime minister, you can buy football teams, you can get medicine to cure your cancer, privately. You can decided to close down supermarkets (check Gaidamak), you can get the best surgeon.
I will get the same services as the other person in the near by bed. I just hope she is getting good care. very good care, for free.
Few weeks ago went to a hotel for Shabbat with a group of friends, or to be accrute, friends of friends. All lovely people, English Speaking. I didnt preform any social skills that Shabbat: I was quite, very slow and sensetive. Towards the end I started warming up, caatting with people. you know, being friendly.

There is a gain, and a pain. I was asked twice if I am Irish. Yeup.

So its eight days before the operation. I went to the hospital today, to get some papers my Kupat Holim (NHS)needs, no idea why they cannot fax or email it themselves, why on earth would they want to put someone as irresponsible as me in the middle. Of course I got there without the right papers. and its 36 degrees out.
The bright side:
1. It helped being there, it is becoming real, and therefore less scary.
2. I dont need to get the monthly injection. less pain, my gain.
3. I didnt have change so the nice guy let me out withput paying for parking.
4. There is a little mall there, with lots of cafes and fresh juices, and a health store. All sorted now.
5. S is flying in, with lots of mags, sorted.

So its getting better, I can even write about it in my blog. I guess its part of including it in my life. not something to hide or to be ashamed of, its just part of life.

Sometines I feel something. I carry an emotion, I am in a mental state, and it has no name.
Its quite how I feel now. the only thing that comes to mind is Graceland.
Thats how I feel today. Graceland. How on earth Paul Simon knows How I feel?
I wonder.

The mississippi delta was shining
Like a national guitar
I am following the river
Down the highway
Through the cradle of the civil war
Im going to graceland
Graceland
In memphis tennessee
Im going to graceland
Poorboys and pilgrims with families
And we are going to graceland
My traveling companion is nine years old
He is the child of my first marriage
But Ive reason to believe
We both will be received
In graceland

She comes back to tell me shes gone
As if I didnt know that
As if I didnt know my own bed
As if Id never noticed
The way she brushed her hair from her forehead
And she said losing love
Is like a window in your heart
Everybody sees youre blown apart
Everybody sees the wind blow

Im going to graceland
Memphis tennessee
Im going to graceland
Poorboys and pilgrims with families
And we are going to graceland

And my traveling companions
Are ghosts and empty sockets
Im looking at ghosts and empties
But Ive reason to believe
We all will be received
In graceland

There is a girl in new york city
Who calls herself the human trampoline
And sometimes when Im falling, flying
Or tumbling in turmoil I say
Oh, so this is what she means
She means were bouncing into graceland
And I see losing love
Is like a window in your heart
Everybody sees youre blown apart
Everybody sees the wind blow

In graceland, in graceland
Im going to graceland
For reasons I cannot explain
Theres some part of me wants to see
Graceland
And I may be obliged to defend
Every love, every ending
Or maybe theres no obligations now
Maybe Ive a reason to believe
We all will be received
In graceland

Lyrics by Paul Simon, of course

Its my house warming party tonight. It means a lot to me. Its more my finally landing party, and also 18 days before my operation it is my way of saying, Hi, who ever is responsible for whats going on, probably G-d Almighty himself, look that`s how I am. Happy, with many friends, able to work to study to progress, capable to throw a wild party, (as wild as a geek like me can be), surly if I can do this I can fully recover, right?
(I do realise its more proving to myself. Not to no one else).

Its also about finding my place, in a practical way - new flat where I want to live, and also in an inner way. being happier with who I am, accepting my flaws, celebrating what I am proud of.

from Haaretz regarding UK Acedemic boycott

I usually try not to read Haaretz - I would read its litrature and culture supplement, I will flick through it on the internet. Its far from my views. Not tghis morning though...

Battle for Britain

By Haaretz Editorial
Britain has become in recent years the battlefield in Israel's fight for its existence as a Jewish state.

The number of British organizations calling for the boycott of Israel, their public campaigns, and their constant comparisons between Israel and the apartheid regime of South Africa have made the battle for British public opinion particularly significant.

On Wednesday, representatives of the new British University and College Union (UCU) will be meeting in Bournemouth. On the agenda is another proposal to boycott Israel's academic institutions. These proposals have become as regular and as predictable as Qassam attacks on Sderot. The fact that studies at the Sapir Academic College in Sderot are not taking place because of the constant rocket fire from Gaza, even though the college is not in occupied territory and Gaza is no longer occupied, apparently does not bother British academia. The fact that Hamas, which controls the Palestinian Authority, does not recognize even pre-1967 Israel, and commits acts of terror against civilians, does not matter either. These nuances did not stop one boycott initiator from saying last week that justice in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is entirely on one side.

In the face of boycott proposals by Britain's National Union of Journalists, by a group of British doctors and a group of architects, and in the wake of the Anglican Church's decision to divest from companies cooperating with Israel, even the Israeli left - which opposes the occupation and has been working against it for years - has no choice but to fight back. Taking off the gloves in this debate involves knowingly foregoing the kudos that British academia lavishes on all who are willing to express anti-Israel stands. The UCU has even had the termerity to proclaim that Israeli lecturers who disown the policies of the Israeli government will not be boycotted. It is British academics who should lose sleep over this McCarthyistic demand. Academic freedom means first of all an open exchange of opinions, without coercion, and not shutting people's mouths. Moreover, the British boycott is directed at Israel's academic institutions that in any case are a bastion of opposition to the occupation.

On the 40th anniversary of the Six-Day War, British academia should look realistically at peace efforts in the Middle East: Over the past decade, Israel has elected governments that have expressed the desire of a majority of Israelis for a bilateral solution of two states for two peoples and a withdrawal from most of the settlements. The withdrawal from Gaza was to have been the first stage. The victory of Hamas, which refuses to recognize Israel, cut off the process.

The anti-Zionist winds blowing in Europe, mainly in academia and in Britain, strengthen the position that the very birth of the Jewish state was a mistake. The European hard left regards the Law of Return as the root of all evil; however, without acknowledging the Jewish character of the State of Israel, there is not even a basis for dialogue. British academia is in fact demanding that Israel democratically cease to exist as a Zionist entity, and that it be swallowed up in the non-democratic region in order to pander to the latest trend

I am famous!

I am kinda cleb, in some parts of the world at least.
the beautiful girls there are my ex-chanichot, not professional models.
Thanks to H, for being a great guest and a feeder.
The strike is over.
The only bit I like about it is the fact I ad no university on Sfirat Haomer - from Pesach till Shavuot.
I read this morning that we will have shorter breaks, and the semester will run till the end of June - mid July, we might study on Fridays as well.
It not good for me.
My operation is on the 3 week of June, by the time I will PG recover the semester will be over.
Any magic powder anywhere?
Shavuot is i the air. I picked up my friend Emily from the airport at 2:30am, I am tired but excited. Feels good to be in Israel for Shavuot, the whole country is preparing it self. Cool cheeses on the shelves, street parties, it nice. Just slightly more atmosphere from what you usually get in your kosher deli.

There is a war in the air too. Sderot is being bombed, Houses dimolished, a women was killed from a direct missle. The army is bombing back in Gaza. How can we fully celebrate the Holiday in Jerusalem when Sderot is bleeding?

About the Greenberg Method, and my dear friend Rivka

We were flat mates for a while, and became good friends.Rivka has amazing abilities like healing my right shoulder and doing wonders to others, now the whole world knows about it. very proud of her.

The stress buster

Natasha Reid was desperate to treat her crippling panic attacks without drugs. But neither hypnotherapy nor cognitive behavioural therapy did any good. Finally, she stumbled upon the Grinberg method ...

The Guardian

My first appointment with a Grinberg method practitioner was a revelation: I had barely got my shoes and socks off before Rivka Halbershtat started reading my feet and promptly recounted my entire physical and emotional history.
I was looking for a way to handle crippling panic attacks without taking anti-depressants, and found a remedy that seemed both baffling and commonsense. I had tried hypnotherapy, which was farcical - the hypnotherapist tried to link all my problems to potty training - and cognitive behavioural therapy, which helped me to analyse my fears and see them as irrational, but the breathing exercises to prevent hyperventilation were impossible in social situations. How could I inhale and exhale for counts of four throughout, say, a job interview?

A friend suggested the Grinberg method, calling it "a kind of a physical therapy for psychological problems". It is quietly gaining ground in complementary therapy circles, and in Berlin - where I live, and where alternative health practices are taken very seriously indeed - it is a rising trend. Most "qualified" practitioners are concentrated in Israel and continental Europe, although next year a new school will open in Los Angeles, and presumably decimate the pedicure industry (sanded down soles of feet make them hard to read).
A wave of Britons are training at European schools this year, while Victoria Oldham already runs a booked-out clinic in London's Triyoga Studios. People will travel great distances to see a particular practitioner - coming to Berlin from as far afield as Israel, Spain and Denmark. The method was developed by the Israeli reflexologist Avi Grinberg in the 1980s. Working as a paramedic and later as a nurse, Grinberg was frustrated by the care provided for patients with chronic health problems, and spent years exploring alternatives from Feldenkrais - which teaches "awareness through movement" - to martial arts and trying techniques such as deep tissue massage and acupressure. The method evolved, and continues to evolve, from this mishmash of references.

What I found startling about Halbershtat's foot diagnosis was how swiftly she got to the point, articulating things that I couldn't. The idea is that, if you stand on your feet all day, your emotional and physical history will show up as scars and marks on your feet.

Her questions invariably hit the mark, and I found myself in tears when she nailed the age I'd been when my family moved countries and I first started to experience anxiety. At this point, my inner sceptic was in revolt - wasn't this like "cold reading" when a fake psychic asks leading questions to extract information? I sent a friend, who is an even greater sceptic than I, off for a foot reading and he also ended up completely bowled over and a little shaken.

Halbershtat was also able to map which parts of my body suffered pain or tension: the shoulders, chest and neck mainly, but also my lower back. I was mystified, and asked how she could tell. "Well, you have a lot of thick skin on the balls of your feet," she said, "which corresponds to your chest area. That indicates a feeling of heaviness and pressure which shouldn't be there."

The next stage was "body work". Halber-shtat went straight to two painful points on my shoulders and pressed deep into them, then told me to tense and exaggerate what I was doing. A clenched muscle in my shoulder connected to one in my neck, tightening my throat while another pulled up my diaphragm and my lower belly and so on, all the way to my toes, which started twitching.

My breathing became shallow, and I panicked and felt sick. I'd thrown my entire posture out of sync, constricted my lungs and my throat. So it hadn't been just psychosomatic after all - rather a mixture of physical and emotional reactions. The treatment also helped me see how every single bodily ache and pain I'd whinged about for years knitted together - all self-inflicted it seemed.

Halbershtat told me I had to recognise exactly what I was doing and then stop myself: I had to learn this physically, not mentally. Trying to suppress the panic was making it worse. She worked on my neck and shoulders then left me to lie quietly for 10 minutes. After, I got up and walked home, feeling strangely normal for the first time in months.

The "body work" seems intuitive to me, although Vered Manasse, a teacher at Berlin's Grinberg Method School, calls it "systematic ... we spend a minimum of three years learning many different techniques, and we can draw on all of them as the situation demands". The word "touch" is preferred to "massage", because, as Manasse points out, "Massage has a very specific intention - it's about relaxing the muscles - and we have many other intentions".

Through "touch", practitioners are also encouraging clients to focus on a body part, and understand that they are not using a certain muscle, or have knotted it up. After treatment you can end up feeling almost bruised - it can be excruciating - but that means that you remain aware of that precise part of your body.

Since I began my "process" my sessions have followed the same format. Halbershtat has found spots on my body - like my forehead or mid back - which are so tense that a particularly deep "touch" will leave me writhing in agony. Most clients present physical complaints. Oldham says: "We usually see people with symptoms which they don't recognise as stress: back pain, IBS, migraines."

Serious physical and mental illnesses are beyond the method, although practitioners often work with patients who are in recovery. Grinberg practitioners also recommend the method for those who are caught in a pattern of behaviour that exasperates them - it seems you can do Grinberg for pretty much anything that ails you: writer's block, poor concentration, relationship problems. Just don't call it a cure. "We aren't healers," says Manasse. "This is not a substitute for conventional medicine. We teach - you learn how to pay attention to your body, and to let it tell you what is best. Your body knows how to create a panic attack, and a practitioner helps you to understand how it does that, and therefore to stop it."

That's the crux of the Grinberg method: the responsibility lies with the client, not the practitioner, to make a change. One process - which could take anything from 10 appointments to two years, depending on how much the client wants to explore - is supposed to set you up for life.

After only a few sessions I was able to go to the cinema without bolting out in a surge of claustrophobia, because I had learned that if I don't constrict my diaphragm I won't feel like I am about to faint or vomit. I know exactly how to stop myself doing it, too, and how to breathe easily.

Progress is a mixture of "Eureka!" moments and a slow, concentrated effort to break down habits that have built up over years, like calluses, but after six months of weekly sessions, the attacks have definitely become less severe.
